Police Air Wing have rescued a man who became stranded on a rock whilst fishing near Tarwin Lower yesterday. The 56-year-old was about 200 meters from shore at Bear Gully at 3.30pm and was fishing for approximately four hours.

He noticed the tide come in around the rock and was unable to get back to the beach. His friend was on the beach and called Triple Zero.

Air Wing spotted the man and winched him to safety where the Mitcham man was checked by paramedics but did not require any treatment.

A reader has relayed what a family member saw.

"My mother-in-law was down there earlier in the day and saw him stuck out there, crouching when the waves hit on the high tide and there was coincidentally a local paramedic down there who said they would normally send a chopper but we hadn't heard any choppers.

"The at about 4.45pm we heard the chopper fly over so we went down to the beach to look, hoping everything came off OK."

The local reader took a video, the first one (not shown here) dropped a rescuer in the water to assist with the harness. The second video (attached) shows the man being lifted off the rock and rescued.

The tide was an unusually high one today, peaking at 2.9 metres at 2.29 pm at Inverloch on Sunday, April 23.
