LAST Saturday's Woolamai races saw the 3rd running of Victoria's shortest thoroughbred race, the Woolamai Whirlwind over the unique distance of 888 metres. The race was won by Dr Coto and ridden by Caitlin King.
Ironically Dr Coto and trainer Rob Gillahan travelled the longest distance of all candidates to win the shortest race, as they are based at Ensay north of Bairnsdale. The race was sponsored by the appropriately named 888 Racing, operated by trainer Dean Binaisse at Mornington.
Due to power outages in the district, contingency plans were quickly formulated with committee members having generators at the ready in case the power was still off at the track on Saturday afternoon. However, power was restored by Friday afternoon and the meeting went ahead as planned with a healthy crowd in fine weather under the famous elm trees.
Other winners included Crafty Goddess in the first for in-form jockey Henry Jaggard, who also won the 4th on top weight Largeincharge. Kahungunu won the 2nd for Jack Virgona, and Shahin made it 2 out of 3 combining again with jockey Sophie Clayfield in the 3rd and See it All defeated Woolamai Cup winner Popeye The Sailor for Mal and Brenda Watts of Catani to win the last.
The final meeting for the season will be on St Patrick's Day, Sunday, March 17.
