YOUR editorial (ST 27/12 ) giving Victoria’s daily interest payments of $24 million per day by 2026-27, yes just the interest, and yes per day, does seem incredible. That’s the price we pay for a spendthrift Labor party. But is the coalition any better, does anyone care, does it even matter? Arghh.

On your same page are some great contributions from Rod Gallagher and Christopher Eastman-Neagle. The following quotes they give would apply to all levels of government: “it’s not their money”, “work expands to fill the time available....”, “...in favour of warm and fuzzy, sharing and caring ‘supportings’”, “...became an easy target for ideological opportunists”; and “...took no account of the people who paid their fat salaries.”

The interest shown by many in South Gippsland’s local laws fiasco has been inspiring, maybe change is afoot. And action probably needs to start at the local level and grow from there.

l hope Christopher, Rod and others willing to tackle the status quo may stand for the upcoming council elections.
