WONTHAGGI young people and seniors have both identified social housing as their number one priority for Bass Coast’s four-point strategic plan during the ‘Our Bass Coast Our Future’ consultation.
More than seventy shoppers, residents and interested visitors made their views known at a community feedback day in the Wonthaggi library on Thursday.
Top of the list for young people was housing and homelessness. Young people also registered their support for a youth coordinator in Bass Coast.
Community Engagement Adviser for Bass Coast Austin Cram said there was a real passion for social housing.
“Support for the disadvantaged crosses all types of needs including cost of living and housing disadvantage,” observed Austin Cram.
“There’s a great sense of pride.”
“The beautification of Wonthaggi streetscapes is important to residents.”
Grantville residents saw support for local businesses as their greatest need.
Cowes nominated the environment and climate change as Phillip Island’s key local issues.
For Wonthaggi, roads and footpaths rated highly along with more attention to the needs of young people, dogs off-leash areas, more industrial land, cloth nappies, tourism opportunities for seniors, homes and spaces for the homeless and improved rail connections.
The last two Bass Coast community consultation sessions will be held at the Inverloch Community Hub on Tuesday, August 13 from 11am to 2pm and the San Remo Foreshore on Friday, August 23 from 10am to noon.
