Hundreds of Nippers descend on Woolamai Beach
Under 13 Nippers at Smiths Beach receive a briefing on surf conditions.

WOOLAMAI Beach SLSC Nippers kicked off on Thursday December 29, 2022, on Phillip Island.

With around 350 children enrolled in the Nippers program, it runs across seven days concluding on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

The hugely popular summer intensive program teaches children aged 6–13 years surf education, lifesaving skills and fitness, in a safe and fun environment.

“Surf Life Saving is a great activity for growing a child’s confidence, knowledge and skills in the beach environment, not only do the Nippers have fun and meet new friends, but they also become part of an iconic organisation that has served the Australian community for over 100 years,” Nippers director Tanya Pinnock said.

To ensure Nippers experience different types of surf, the under seven-11 age groups participate in Nippers at Cleeland Bight Beach in Cape Woolamai, whilst the under 12 and 13-year-old Nippers enjoy the challenging conditions on offer at Smiths Beach, as they learn to read and navigate heavy surf conditions.

Back this year at Cleeland Bight is the ever-popular Nippers barbecue.

“We’ve got around 100 volunteers assisting with the program, and approximately 50 trained lifesavers providing water safety for our Nippers, which is terrific to see,” said Pinnock.
