MEMBERS of CWA Mirboo North Night Owls are holding a Community Expo on December 8 at the town’s Shire Hall to showcase local community groups and what they offer, and also to provide support for victims of domestic violence.

Night Owls secretary Bev O’Connor said the expo provides the opportunity to put women experiencing domestic violence in touch with appropriate services, while allowing them to be part of a broad community event.

Close to 40 community groups will be represented at the event, with three or four stalls able to provide information for those experiencing family violence.

Anglicare, Headspace and The Orange Door will be present.

While the opportunity to enjoy a free Devonshire tea and savour CWA’s famous scones is reason enough for locals to attend the expo, Bev said the organisation’s role extends well beyond baking.

“The purpose of the CWA is to support women and children in the community,” she said, with that mission aligning with the current Orange the World campaign run by the United Nations and its 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence.

Bev believes people’s understanding of the CWA’s role and their trust in the organisation will encourage many to attend the expo.

Community groups have embraced the opportunity to be part of the event, with their members looking forward to chatting to people about what the groups do and the benefits of joining.

Sporting clubs, the local Lions Club and the organisers of the town’s Italian Festa will be among the many community groups present.

Attendees are encouraged to vote for the group of their choice, with the winning organisation to receive a $500 prize courtesy of the Community Bank Mirboo North & District.

Bev said the club’s Night Owls nickname is important as it reflects the fact the group meets in the evenings, enabling working women to be a part of the organisation.
