• A Grade, Division 1
LEONGATHA Town welcomed Inverloch down to Scorpion Park on Saturday for what was a huge "win-and-get-in" clash, with both sides’ finals hopes resting on victory.
Town won the toss and chose to bat first on what proved to be a challenging pitch early with the Stingrays tight bowling.
Invy spearhead Lewis Rankin (3/61 from 18) was charging in and was able to break through the top order with three early wickets and looked to have his tail up.
However, with the Scoprions 4/24 and Amila Ratnaike (ultimately making 114 from 146) walking to the crease, the visitors knew it wasn't over yet, but little did anyone expect what happened next.
Combining with Madura Madusanka (128 from 155), Ratnaike was able to weather the Stingrays storm and completely flip the momentum back in his side’s favour; the pair putting on an absolute masterclass, with a mammoth 227-run partnership.
Eventually though, the Stingrays were able to wrestle back some control in the contest through allrounder Andrew Donohue (5/78 from 17.3) to clean up the Town tail.
But the Scorpions, with their backs to the wall in the early stages, put their best foot forward and look to be charging towards a finals berth, setting a big total for the Stingrays to chase, finishing 10/292.
Nerrena hold Koony to 135 on day one
KOONWARRA L/RSL faced off with Nerrena at the Leongatha Recreation Reserve and the Cougars won the toss and chose to bat first.
Unfortunately though, their hopes at pulling off another big upset were hit hard after the majority of their XI barely made it into double figures.
The Koony captain Ben Walsh (66 from 154) was again bold but it wasn’t enough as his side fell 10/135, setting up a relatively easy chase for the Red Caps this weekend.
Ryan Clark (2/23 from 12) bowled well for Nerrena.
Lamers five sees Island collapse again
OMK welcomed Phillip Island to the Outtrim Recreation Oval in what shaped to be an absolute blockbuster between the minor premiers and the reigning premiers who were desperate for a win to book a finals spot.
The Island won the toss and chose to bat first and unfortunately for them, that was about all the luck their had all afternoon.
In stunning fashion, after their opening pair made it to 28, the Sharks lost 10/52 to finish all out for just 80!
The collapse is their second in as many games and has seen them again score under 90, this time their top scorer was opener Daniel Bourke (26 from 54).
Diggers young gun Jacob Lamers (5/24 from 12) sensationally ripped through the middle order with three wickets in his first over!
Lamers’ first trio of scalps included Shiran Rathnayake (6) and former Diggers Daniel Mock and Thomas Keily who both fell for ducks.
Lamers finished with a superb five wicket haul, but the entire OMK attack bowled magnificently.
In reply, the hosts even had over 20 overs to cut into the 81 runs required for the win and did so and despite getting a bit shaky on their way, were able to knock off the total with four wickets to spare.
Noel Creed (42* from 68) led the way with the bat, while Keily (3/55 from 14) tried hard with the ball for the Island, they’ll now hope the other results fall perfectly in their favour as they cling to the second spot on the ladder.
Wright takes five as Wonny fall for 149
THE Imperials welcomed Wonthaggi to East Campus Oval and looking to sneak into the finals with a win and some luck, the visitors won the toss and chose to bat first.
Although they may want their chance again after a bumpy innings saw several of their top and middle order players get starts but fail to go onto a big score.
Alex Geyer (44 from 109) and Mitchell Thomas’ (32 from 37) innings looked promising, but the pair both fell before reaching the half century mark as Club were dismissed for 149.
The hometown Imps were led beautifully by Lachlan Wright (5/25 from 13/1) who finished with a brilliant five wicket haul.
The Wonny’ boys are now going to have to bowl tight if they’re any chance of sneaking into the finals with a win when they return to East Campus Oval this Saturday.
