POOWONG welcomed Yarragon on Saturday in all four divisions, well done to both clubs for making the effort of fielding four teams.
Poowong were forced to make a change with Steve McInnes suffering a “hammy” last week back in Andrew Logan back from a “hammy”.
The Magpies kicked to the Drouin Road end with the wind, the ground was soft after this week’s rain but stood up well.
It was Yarragon that was first on the board with a goal, Poowong replied with a goal to Alex Henshall, play was confined to the scoreboard wing for a lot of the match being the scoring side.
Poowong were playing well an added three more goals for the quarter with goals to Kurt Newton from a free kick, Alex Henshall running into goal and Micah Williams marking and kicking Poowong’s fourth.
Good quarter by Poowong, now with Yarragon having the wind probably worth 2-3 goals it would be up to Poowong’s defence to hold firm, though not impossible to score against the breeze.
Jack Hazendonk and Connor Cunningham were causing Yarragon a problem and with Poowong’s defence
playing well they started off the third quarter with a fourteen-point lead with the breeze.
The coach asked players to go back to the game plan and work hard with the breeze to be well placed at three quarter time.
Poowong opened with a snap for goal finishing out of bounds on the full.
The Magpies were determined to finish the game off with a victory and when Mitch Molloys kick for goal swung back for Poowong’s 10th they were looking home.
And further certain when Damon Hansen marked and goaled from a kick across goal Poowong were home. Yarragon managed two late goals to finish with five.
The boys sung the club song with great gusto before a large crowd gathered with a grade netballers winning their first game for the season.
Let’s get behind the club who are doing a great job in the community giving people the opportunity to play football and netball and make mates in this tough society.
Remember being a volunteer for the club is a great way to make new mates and join a great family club.
