New dunnies set to go in at Apex Park

THE $350,000 redevelopment of Apex Park’s toilet block is complete after the existing toilets were demolished to make way for a new facility. 

As part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s Wonthaggi Activity Centre Plan, the toilets have been replaced with unisex and accessible facilities, including a Changing Places Toilet Facility.

According to the shire, the existing building couldn’t be kept following a structural assessment which was completed in July 2021, due to vertical and stepwise cracking in interior and exterior walls. 

This report recommended that due to structural issues, the building ultimately needs to be demolished. 

As to why unisex facilities were chosen, the shire also stated that it affords, “the best protection from vandalism and undesirable behaviour.”

“Unisex toilets are also more inclusive, can help to reduce waiting times and make it easier for parents to accompany a child of the opposite sex to the bathroom,” the shire stated.

“The new toilet block will provide a Changing Places Facility and four accessible private cubicles.

“The new facility will provide one additional cubicle to the previous toilet block, and will be more convenient, safe, secure and accessible, with high levels of visibility, durability, security, light and ventilation.”

The project was funded from the State Government’s Regional Infrastructure Grant Program as part of the Wonthaggi Streetscapes project.
