I RECENTLY read in the Sentinel regarding ragwort and the damage it causes.
Last year I had a conversation with the Agricultural Department about the out-of-control weeds throughout Gippsland, East Gippsland and South Gippsland – the noxious weeds are taking over our natural fauna.
Ragwort, wide leaf broom and blackberries grow in abundance in properties and along most of our roadways.
Six years ago I attended a seminar about these weeds, it was noted significant fines apply if they are not removed from your property.
In the recent conversation with the Agricultural Department, I was told that shire councils have lost control of eradicating the weeds and no fines are in place.
You can put so much time and expense into controlling the weeds on your own property, but it makes little difference when the weeds are in abundance outside your boundaries.
