Phillip Island Whale Festival open this weekend

2 min read

MORE than a festival the Phillip Island Whale Festival is seen by Bass Coast Mayor Cr Rochelle Halstead as a reflection of who we are as a community.

Opening the Whale Festival at Berninneit in Cowes Cr Halstead said it was a beloved event that brings our community together in the heart of winter to celebrate the breathtaking sight of southern whales migrating through our waters.

“We are proud of our natural environment, passionate about conservation and deeply connected to our coastal community,” said Cr Halstead.

“This event embodies all that.”

Mayor Halstead said she was thrilled to see the program growing each year with exciting additions like the Bass Strait virtual reality experience, guided walks and talks with scientists, creative workshops and the spectacular events at Berninneit.

“Whether you’re spotting whales at Cape Woolamai, exploring the science of marine life, enjoying a film at Berninneit, or learning through art and stories this festival offers something for everyone,” said Cr Halstead.

The Phillip Island Whale Festival plays a significant role in supporting our local economy according to the Mayor of Bass Coast Shire bringing energy and visitors our towns at a time when things are usually quieter.

“Local businesses benefit, our tourism sector thrives, and our community has the chance to shine on a regional and national stage.

“We’re proud to support this festival through Council’s funding and resources, and we’re grateful to the Victorian Government’s Regional Events Fund for its continued support,” said Cr Halstead.

“More than anything I want to acknowledge the heart and soul that goes into this event, from organisers and volunteers to local artists, scientists, storytellers and community groups.

“Thank you for your vision, your passion and your hard work.”

The Phillip Island Whale Festival is seen as a reminder of the importance of protecting the marine environment, not only for whales but for the health of the entire ecosystem and our own wellbeing.

Education and awareness are seen as key according to Mayor Cr Halstead.

“The weekend gives us so many opportunities to learn, reflect and connect.”

“Let’s celebrate the beauty of the coast, the magic of the whales, and the power of the community.”
