THOUSANDS of police officers are preparing to bring in the new year with the community this Sunday with a major operation planned to ensure everyone gets home safely.
It’s one of the largest blitzes on Victoria Police’s calendar each year, with planning underway for several months to ensure the annual celebration has a strong and highly visible police presence.
The operation will see bolstered resources targeting key areas right across the state.
Locally extra resources will be heading to Bass Coast and South Gippsland from the Public Order Response Team (PORT), Mounted Branch, Latrobe Valley and Baw Baw Police Service Areas.
Patrols will also span to the water and skies with the Air Wing and Water Police Squad to be deployed.
Those driving can expect to see Highway Patrol units conducting drug and alcohol testing right across the state as part of Operation Roadwise.
The road safety blitz will continue on New Year’s Day, with police strongly advising those celebrating the new year to re-think getting behind the wheel.
“We will be very active and visible in the community – engaging with the public,” said Senior Sergeant Muir.
“Roads will be busy and we urge motorists to drive with care. We want people to come and have a great time and return home safely.”
“A successful night for us means everyone enjoying their evening and getting home safely. So please, help us help you and look after yourself, your mates and those around you.
“If you’re planning on having a drink to celebrate the new year, don’t drive – leave the car at home, arrange a designated driver, and utilise alternative transport.”
Illegal fireworks are a continued concern on New Year’s Eve, with police warning such activity poses a real risk of serious injury and fire. Anyone caught using illegal fireworks can face up to 15 years’ jail and substantial fines.
