POOWONG welcomed Nilma Darnum in all four grades of football and six grades of netball – a great effort by both clubs to achieve this. It was a cold wintery day in July with a cold breeze and rain from about 1.30pm which was very heavy at times in the Seniors.

Poowong made four changes, in, Jake Cochrane, Josh Chivaroli, Rhys Schultz and Micah Williames. Out, Gavan Monson U/16’s, Thomas Burgess and Pat Dorian U/18’s and Lachie Waters ill.

Poowong were kicking to the Nyora end against the breeze and were first on the board with a point, Nilma added a goal with a kick from the point post, before a second goal from the boundary line as the rain become heavier, both sides added a late point.

Poowong would need a couple of goals with the breeze to be in the game at half time, Poowong had plenty of opportunities unfortunately they were off line adding one goal four points with four out of bounds, not what you need to win games the goal coming from Alex Henshall from the boundary, Nilma added one goal two as both sides battled it out in heavy rain with the ball difficult to handle.

Nilma appeared to be handling the ball better in the conditions, Poowong were asked to keep working the ball forward at every opportunity, the lights had been on for most of the game as the rain eased.

Poowong had plenty of play, but it was Nilma adding a point and a goal from a free kick before coming back late in the quarter with two goals and a couple of points as Poowong added their tenth point.

Though Poowong had the breeze it would take a big effort to win from the three-quarter time score. Conditions had not improved for the players or umpires who were doing a good job considering the conditions. Poowong added the first goal with Rory Pattinson, followed by Jack Hazendonk kicking a good goal, back to fifteen points. Poowong kept working hard with Mitch Molloy adding a goal together with another two points.

When the siren sounded Poowong were down by thirteen points, Nilma Darnum deserved their win as they were cleaner with the ball on the day though Poowong had plenty of play in the match.

Next week off to Lang Lang, followed by the bye, the season of home and away games is almost over.
