WONTHAGGI Power’s reserves have set themselves up for a shot at a top three finish to the season after a percentage boosting victory over Bairnsdale at Wonthaggi on Saturday, a team they inexplicably lost to earlier in the season.

Despite the windy conditions, Wonthaggi piled on 15.15 to Bairnsdale’s 3.9 in a convincing display.

With winnable games against Warragul and Morwell to come, the Power has the chance to move ahead of Traralgon and take a “double chance” into the finals if they can beat the Maroons in a couple of weeks time.

The Power Reserves set the scene for a big result when they piled on six goals to nil in the first quarter with most of the play in the front half with the likes of Kane McCarthy a driving force, and Ollie Dawson one of a number of players active on the forward line.

Dawson kept the score coming with a nice snap for goal at the start of the last quarter while the likes of Ryan Cornell was having a good tussle in the ruck with Bairnsdale’s Stephenson but with Ethan Dickison, Nathan Jones and Kyle Yann among those dictating terms at the stoppages.

Wonthaggi was working hard at the possession game, lowering the eyes and trying to hit up teammates, and while it didn’t always come off, their efforts will hold them in good stead for the coming weeks.

Good defence by Blake Cornelis and a tackle by Josh Waters led tro a late goal by Charlie Dawson as the seconds capped off a good day’s work.
