Raising awareness for veterans with Sunday Sessions at The Inlet

IN the era where challenges of mental health, addiction, and homelessness are becoming increasingly visible, communities are stepping up to take action. On Sunday, July 20, The Inlet Hotel, Inverloch, are hosting Sunday Sessions, with artists Tristan Ross, Eric Collier, and Janine Garvey performing live, before welcoming the public on stage for open mic night.

The Inlet Hotel are providing a platform to address these issues, with all proceeds supporting the veteran advocacy centre, Boronia, managed by secretary and lead advocate Mick Quinn and his wife and treasurer Fiona Quinn – a centre, which has been an incorporated association since 2003, providing welfare assistance, DVA system processing, and repatriation services for veterans.

“We did the call for the Royal Commission in 2014, leading to significant procedural changes and improved support for veterans,” said Mick.

“Procedurally, within the department, things have changed. The department's approach towards dealing with veterans has shifted. It's become much less adversarial, and the centre is providing comprehensive support for those in need.

The centre assists veterans with medical treatment, helps with their claims into the system, ensures compensation and treatment, as well as runs a food bank for those facing financial hardship and homelessness.

“We top people up with food. We may even cover their rent or whatever costs they have, while we're putting them through the system to get them compensated,” said Mick.

The free event encourages donations, and attending the event provides an opportunity to not only enjoy live music but also to engage in meaningful conversations about these pressing issues.
