LEONGATHA’S Jarryd Roughead joined the Gormandale Tigers for the day last Saturday under the same Carlton Draft Series program that got his premiership mate Shaun Burgoyne to Dalyston a few weeks ago.
A report from the match noted that ‘Roughy’ lined up at full forward initially but later took turns in the ruck where he led a spirited Gormandale fightback in the third quarter, grabbing the ball out of the ruck and snapping a goal, and then setting up another soon after, but it wasn’t to be.
While neither his efforts in general play, nor his two goals could bring home the bacon for Gormandale against old rivals, Glengarry, club officials have hailed the event a great success for the club all the same.
They said there was little doubt that Roughead’s appearance had led to a big boost in gate takings and crowd numbers, and they praised Jarryd for being willing to stay around for a long time after the game signing autographs, chatting and enjoying the aftermatch with players and supporters of both sides.
Jarryd Roughead was strongly touted for selection by Richmond in the 2004 AFL Draft but they took Brett Deledio at 1 before Hawthorn took Roughead at 2, Lance Franklin at 5 and Jordan Lewis at 7.
