A STRONG defensive battle was played out between Inverloch-Kongwak and Kilcunda-Bass, with the Sea Eagles ultimately reigning supreme.
The Sea Eagles have been considered the benchmark of the season, and the Panthers readied themselves for a tough contest at the Inverloch Recreation Reserve.
With favourable conditions, the scene was set a tough clash and a good, clean match was played out.
Both teams played a good defensive game, with much of play taking place in the midfield.
Inverloch-Kongwak moved the ball well, with Marcus Toussaint holding his own in the ruck against Dale Gawley.
However, Kilcunda-Bass’ defensive pressure led by Sam Watson and Daniel Mock kept the Sea Eagles within arm’s reach, limiting them to two goals in the first quarter.
Inverloch-Kongwak responded with intensity of its own, ensuring the Panthers also could not do any damage on the scoreboard.
Will Hams had a strong first quarter for the Sea Eagles, setting up a lot of opportunities in the forward line.
Into the second quarter, Inverloch-Kongwak continued to move the footy well but ran along the same theme and didn’t convert all of its opportunities.
However, three great goals from the midfield by Oscar Toussaint was heralded as highlight of the day.

Midfielder Paul Pattison gave a great performance throughout the day for Inverloch-Kongwak.
At half time, Inverloch-Kongwak strategised to restrict Kilcunda-Bass’ fast ball movements.
It yielded rewards with more goals on the scoreboard for the Sea Eagles, but the Panthers also managed to get their first for the day with a goal from Gawley.
Kilcunda-Bass was also impressed by the efforts of U18 players Jed Rosenow, Ashden Grenness and Owen Thomas, who saw plenty of the ball and held firm against a formidable opposition.
The battle continued through the fourth quarter, and Kilcunda-Bass’ fitness began to outshine the Sea Eagles, resulting in the Panthers winning the quarter.
Anthony Daraio and Lochlan Scott hit the scoreboard for the Panthers.
However, the damage had been done and the Sea Eagles claimed a 41-point victory.
Coming up against Phillip Island next week, Inverloch-Kongwak will be working hard at training and is excited for the challenge.
Kilcunda-Bass will be facing Garfield and is preparing for a contest, but hope to be back on the winner’s list.
