Thorpdale gets the better of Stony Creek
By Rob Popplestone STONY Creek had signalled, even in defeat to the top of the table Newborough last week, that when they put it all together they could be far better than what their current position is. However, their close loss last week faded in...
ON Saturday Thorpdale made the journey to the Racecourse Oval to tackle Stony Creek.
With the Blues coming off 4 wins in a row, they were the hot favourites, however Stony Creek, despite some losses in recent weeks, have continued to be playing a good brand of football and the result could go either way.
The match started in a hotly contested battle, with Thorpdale taking a small one-goal advantage into the first break.
The tight contest continued for much of the second quarter, with the Thorpdale advantage being a mere 4 points at the main break.
Stony Creek was able to come out best after half-time, with forward Jacob Byrnes (3 goals) being a huge factor and leading the Lions to a 22 point lead heading into the last quarter.
However, this match still had plenty to play out with Thorpdale slamming home 5 goals to 1 in the last quarter.
With scores tied at 59 apiece and with only seconds remaining on the clock, a long bomb into the Thorpdale forward line was able to eventually land in the lap of a Thorpdale player, whose rushed kicked was able to trickle across the behind line just 2 seconds before the final siren would sound. Heartbreak for Stony Creek, who had done so much right across the match, yet were unable to take the four points they desired.
Thorpdale’s hot run continues, as that is now 5 wins in a row, and although luck may have played a part in this victory, there is no denying the improvement present from last season and that they are now placing themselves in a great position to have a run at finals in 2023.
