LEONGATHA Tennis Club held their 2023 edition of the Club Championships over the weekend with both Junior and Open events played.

The Juniors event was held Friday afternoon in hot sunshine with 13 players participating. Terrific as always to see the juniors out on the courts enjoying the game of tennis.  Round robin events were played in A, B and C grades – giving all our junior players from the young beginners to the older players a chance to participate in the annual club event.

In A grade – Xavier Bruning won his first junior club championship title with good wins 6-2, 6-4. Runner up was his brother Evan, closely followed by Zak Dowel. Xavier backed up his win in the singles with a win in the doubles – partnering with Archer Hughes to defeat Zak and Evan in a tight match 6-4.

In B grade – all matches were close and any of the players had a chance to win. Ryan Perry was the eventual champion on a countback from runner up Kade Johnston. Archer Commadeur and Declan Russell took out third and fourth spots respectively. In the doubles Ryan also backed up his singles win in partnering with Archer with a convincing win over Declan and Kade.

And the C grade – Olly Ramsbottom won all his matches to win the grade title. Runner up was Harley Langstaff followed by Taeden Giliam. In the doubles Olly partnered with Lachy Johnston to defeat Harley and Taeden in a close match 4-2.

The Open events were played on Sunday in tricky windy conditions. The Open Mens Singles was won for the first time by Warren Littlejohn – his first club championship title in some 30 years of trying to win the title! Runner-up was Paul Ramsbottom, followed by Luke Marshman and James Sage in third and fourth places. There was no Open Womens Singles event played.

Warren repeated his winning singles performance in the doubles. In the Open Mens Doubles Warren Littlejohn and Luke Marshman defeated Frank Dekker and Adrian Littlejohn 8-1.

Congratulations to all players for participating in such great club spirit.
