AHEAD of what is expected to be the busiest weekend in Bass Coast this summer, a key car-charging station at the Cowes Transit Centre is out of action.
Hopefully, not too many electric vehicle owners are caught out, although given the massive influx of people, that has already started, there are bound to be some.
The shire made an announcement about the problem just before Christmas:
“Bass Coast Shire Council advises the community that the Electric Vehicle (EV) Chargers at the Cowes Transit Centre have been impacted by an electrical supply issue, so will be inoperable in coming weeks.
“Council is working with the appropriate authorities to find a permanent solution, to be implemented in early 2023.
“Council advises that alternative EV Charging Stations can be found on PlugShare.com, an interactive map which allows customers to zoom in and explore their location, in Australia or anywhere in the world: http://8https://www.plugshare.com/map/Australia
Alternative facilities, available during their opening hours, are:
- NRMA Phillip Island Beachfront Holiday Park
- Ramada Resort by Wyndham Phillip Island
- Clifftop Accommodation Phillip Island
- Penguin Parade Visitor's Centre
- Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre
- BIG4 Phillip Island Caravan Park
- Silverwater Resort
“We appreciate that these works may present an inconvenience, so we ask for your patience during these times.”

Publicity given to the problem has provided anti-EV trolls to make fun of EV drivers, including the following:
* Is that like a petrol station running out of petrol?
* Worse you can’t go fill a can with electricity
It gave others the chance to ask why ratepayers were having to pay the cost of providing free recharging.
But other comments are more relevant:
* Not easy to convince partners to go electric when being stranded is real.
