SOMETHING really special took place earlier this month, with the women’s cricket comp double header. Nyora, Phillip Island, Foster, Kilcunda-Bass, Koony RSL, Inverloch, and the mighty Leongatha Town Scorpions. We came together, we took centre stage. It was a powerful sight.
Once upon a time only exceptional women were cricketers, but now it’s accessible. T20s every second Sunday. No culottes. All over South Gippy and Bass, women are playing cricket for the first or second time or coming back after a long break. Some of us are really impressive, some of us are really not. All of us are welcome.
It can be intense, cricket. You think you’re doing ok and then one week the ball just sticks to your hand. The ball is hard, proper hard. You don’t want it to cop it in the face.
But the banter is lively. You forge new friendships and cement old ones, mixing with legendary humans of all ages. You laugh – at yourselves, at each other, at your cricket pants. You become a team.
Guys at the club are invested, contributing numerous volunteer hours. They welcome us with warm grins, tell us about the times the ball stuck to their hand too.
The exceptional women cricketers who came before us did the hard yards, they made women’s cricket a thing. Thank you, exceptional women – women’s cricket is a bloody wonderful thing.
Come get amongst it! The competition is heating up.
Head out on Sunday and support your local women and girls.
