FOUR Wonthaggi Croquet Club members travelled to Korumburra on the weekend of November 18 and 19 to compete in their annual doubles tournament.
Tom Lacey and Sue Baker were successful in topping the bill in Section 1, winning five games (+2 hoops) from the Warragul pairing of Julie Beasley and Heather Lees who won four games (+9 hoops).
This was Sue’s first two-day tournament for some time, having had to recover from a shoulder injury – well done.
Max Wise teamed up with Ian Nicholas (Korumburra), also in Section 1, winning two games and Kathy Ross teamed up with Maree Nicholas (Korumburra) in Section 2, winning one game.
Wonthaggi’s external handicap singles was held on November 25 and 26 with players from far and wide participating. Sponsored by the Wonthaggi Workmens Club, the tournament was a huge success.
Two sections of eight players each fiercely competed over the two days.
It was the first time an external event has been held where the club was able to showcase its new club rooms.
Play was held up late on Saturday due to thunder and lightning, and abandoned earlier than planned due to torrential rain. Catch up play started early on the Sunday, and all ended well early that afternoon.
Paul Manwaring from the RNB club took out Section 1, winning five of seven games with Wilma Freeman from Sale as runner up.
Section 2 was won by Mick Crawford from Drouin with six games (+14 hoops) just pipping Denise Bray from Phillip Island with 6 games (+12 hoops) – a closely fought section indeed.
Wonthaggi’s Kathy Ross stepped in to fill the last place in this section, winning two games against some very experienced players.
Tom Lacey (Wonthaggi) and Terri Manwaring (RNB) were the referees on the weekend and many of our members assisted throughout – a big thanks to all of them.
A thank you also to Haymes Paint Shop Wonthaggi who, for many years now, have supplied the club with line marking paint.
