CAIRNLEA, the Victorian Croquet Association headquarters, hosted a five day series of tournaments over the Australia Day period from January 25-29.
Four of our members entered (Neil Warburton, Virginia Wheeler, Tom Lacey and Paul Andrews) with Sue Baker cheering them on and ultimately assisting with the administration/scoring on the last two days. Great experience for her.
Neil Warburton won his section in the singles on the 25th with Virginia Wheeler coming third. Tom Lacey finished runner-up in his section of the singles.
Neil and Virginia fronted for the open doubles winning three games. This was won by the brother and sister combination of Shane Downie (Traralgon) and Julie Beasley (Warragul) winning all their nine games.
The open singles was divided into 4 Blocks with Neil winning one game in Block A, Tom and Paul each winning 3 games in Block C and Virginia winning one game in Block D. The calibre of all players in both the singles and doubles was outstanding.
The title ultimately went to Shane Downie of Traralgon who, over the five days, won 21 of his 22 games in both doubles and singles combined. Congratulations.
Twilight play on Monday evenings at Wonthaggi has kicked off again with a bang by going back to a very social format, including a repast of fish n chips or the like.
In the wake of the announcement by council that all the funding has now been approved for the building of our new clubrooms, shed clearing has commenced and the excitement is building in anticipation.
