THE Cape Paterson Aquathon had a record number of participants for 2024 with almost 300 entries according to organisers.
The event, held on Sunday, January 21, at Cape Paterson near the surf life saving club begins with a 400m surf swim followed by a 4.4km run.
There were participants of all ages from young to old with some coming from interstate to compete.
While the weather was on the cooler side, fortunately it held up for the day with surf conditions also pleasant.
“We were very close to 300 entries (today), a record number,” Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club life member Karen Marangio said.
“We’re delighted; there’s some elite athletes but most are part of the community and want to have a go.”
There were also many ‘superstars’ on the day, which includes those who have completed 10, 15 and 20 aquathons.

Reaching the 20 plus milestone was Cape Paterson local Gary O’Connor, who has participated every year (besides COVID) for 20 consecutive years.
Gary’s sons are also involved in the aquathon, making the milestone even more memorable.
“It’s (aquathon) for a great cause and the boys have always been involved with it,” Gary said.
“It’s a fun event, we all live here and go down the pub afterwards and it’s good to catch up with everyone.”
The race saw Melbourne resident Callum McClusky take out the top time of 18 minutes and 55 seconds, closely followed by Adelaide’s Chris Deegan at 18 minutes and 59 seconds.
Callum highlighted he has competed in other Bass Coast Series events but never in the aquathon.
They both noted the water was quite ‘cold’ with Chris braving the waves without a wetsuit.
