POLICE are investigating a fatal collision in Loch on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood a car being driven on the South Gippsland Highway, left the roadway and crashed into a tree where it caught fire near the intersection of Loch-Poowong Road, about 2.20pm.

The driver, a male who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Investigators are working to establish the exact circumstances of the collision and investigations are ongoing.

There have been 181 fatalities on Victoria’s roads so far this year, up from 146 last year.
