Labor leads Bass by 210 votes with fewer than 1000 votes to come
LABOR’S Jordan Crugnale is strengthening her grip on the District of Bass, following more than a week of counting after the State Election, adding further to her overnight lead on Monday night.
Ms Crugnale stretched her margin over the Liberals’ Aaron Brown to 210 votes late in the day, up from 179 at lunchtime.
Crucially though, 89.1% of the total enrolment of 49,984 votes have now been counted, meaning that there could be fewer than 1000 votes still to be included in the count, going by the turnout at the 2018 election in Bass of 91.06% of the total enrolment.
Ms Crugnale increased her votes, on a two-candidate preferred basis, from 20,734 (50.22%) to 20,911 (50.3%) in the most recent counting, now 210 ahead of Aaron Brown, who increased his voted from 20,555 (
49.78%) to 20,701 but fell behind on percentage terms to 49.7% but still agonisingly close to an historic victory.
More votes are expected to be added tomorrow, while rechecking will also occur. It may be that the Brown camp will call for a full recount later in the week, so there’s not like to be an official announcement about the result until later in the week.
If Ms Crugnale holds Bass for Labor, and Kat Theophanous (ahead by 189) defeats the Greens’ Campbell Gome in Northcote and Nathan Lambert takes Preston (leads by 1800 votes); the Andrews Government will have achieved their mission impossible and retained 55 seats in the 88-seat parliament.
The Liberals look like winning Pakenham now, where David Farrelly is in front by 90 votes, over Emma Vulin, but there could still be 3000 more votes to come there.
