B Grade, Division 2

NERRENA performed strongly with the ball after choosing to bowl, restricting Outtrim Moyarra Kongwak to just 8/116 off its 40 overs but couldn’t establish the partnerships needed to achieve victory.

Just a couple of Nerrena batsmen reached double figures, Scott Checkley best with 24.

OMK’s Robert Quaife was a wrecking ball, skittling half of the Nerrena batting lineup and conceding just 23 runs off his full allotment of overs.

Club president Russ White was the Diggers’ other multiple wicket taker, yielding a miserly nine runs off eight overs and dismissing a couple of opponents.

White’s earlier 37 with the bat proved crucial in helping OMK to a defendable total.

Nerrena’s Scott Checkley also delivered a strong all round contribution, starting with 3/13 from his maximum number of overs and teammate Cameron Baudinette was another to impress with the ball with 2/15 off eight overs.

Korumburra scrapes home against Glen Alvie
KORUMBURRA triumphed by a wicket in a home thriller after sending visitor Glen Alvie in first.

Glen Alvie’s 6/121 was built largely on the contributions of Nathan Thatcher (26 not out), captain Steven Smith (24) and Harvey Smith (20) with most of the Korumburra bowling attack contributing strongly.

Multiple wicket takers for the Cobras were captain Darren Scott with 2/20 and Daniel Whelan (2/4).

Whelan followed up his bowling exploits with a determined innings of 19 off 52 balls and Cameron Smith gave the Cobras hope with a patient knock of 42 but was the seventh wicket with 18 still needed for victory.

James Dunn’s wicket fell before a run had been added.

Korumburra then compiled a 16-run partnership to edge within a run of Glen Alvie’s total before Zack Scholz bowled Matt Foote for two.

Number 11 Cobra Caleb Turton (3 not out) produced the necessary heroics.

Scholz topped the Glen Alvie wicket takers with 3/9 at barely more than a run per over, with teammate Jack Brown capturing a tidy 2/23 off eight overs.

Kilcunda-Bass does enough against Island
KILCUNDA-BASS chose to bowl first at home, dismissing Phillip Island for 130 and got home by four wickets in the penultimate over despite appearing shaky when the sixth wicket fell with 39 runs required.

Top scorer Ray Gardiner (54 not out) and an undefeated near run a ball 25 from Allan Bedford completed the successful chase for Kilcunda-Bass.

Matthew Parsons was one of the Phillip Island bowlers not allowing the home side any easy runs, conceding just eight at a run per over and managing a couple of wickets, while his teammate Peter Francis grabbed 3/23.

Earlier, Kilcunda-Bass skipper Bradley Waldron scuttled Phillip Island’s number three to six batsmen in a 4/19 display from his eight overs.

Foster chases down Club
FOSTER put visitor Wonthaggi Club in first and made it work hard for its 7/133, a total the Tigers overhauled to win by three wickets.

Jayden Burns middle-order contribution of 37 helped Club establish a decent total.

Foster had solid contributors across the board with the ball, Ben East (2/21) leading the way from Peter Grant (2/23) and Lance Moon (2/27).

Tigers captain and opening batsman Brandon Busuttil was instrumental in laying the foundation for his side’s successful chase, making 43 at not much below a run a ball before being run out.

His opening partner Ben East was dismissed the same way but not before contributing 25, a score matched by number three batsman Jake Pilkington.

While a couple of ducks and a one had Foster in a slightly concerning position at 6/115, an unbeaten 19 from Jarryd Guganovic proved important.
