BURRA Foods has joined the chorus of praise for Leongatha’s Eleanor Patterson after backing the local athletics star with a Brand Ambassador sponsorship over a number of years.

Together with local politicians, community members and friends, Burra Foods has congratulated Eleanor, repeating what many commentators have said about her World Championship Gold Medal effort as “stunning”.

“Burra Foods Brand Ambassador Eleanor Patterson is the new women’s high jump world champion,” said Burra Foods in a statement this afternoon.

“The Leongatha local and former Commonwealth Games champion produced a stunning career best and equalled the Australian record of 2.02 metres to win the gold medal today at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

“This makes Patterson Australia’s 10th track and field world champion. Her performance in Eugene was an improvement of two centimetres on her previous personal best and a goal she had been working to for some time.

“She upstaged the crowd favourite, Ukraine’s Yaraslava Mahuchikh who took away the silver medal. Patterson and Mahuchikh were the only athletes to clear 2.02m.

“The Australian achieved it with her first jump, putting her into the lead outright, while the Ukrainian needed two attempts.

“This is a stunning win for our local girl who we are excited to watch compete in the Commonwealth Games at the end of this month,” said Burra Foods.

Eleanor Patterson became the first Australian to win a high jump medal at the Athletics World Championships, claiming gold in Oregon with a career-best performance.

The 26-year-old cleared a height of 2.02m on her first attempt, defeating Ukrainian opponent Yaroslava Mahuchikh via countback, and then took a free shot at 2.04 which she narrowly missed.

Another Australian, Nicola Olyslagers, was equal fifth with a clearance of 1.96m.

It is Australia's second medal of the world championships, with Nina Kennedy collecting bronze in the women's pole vault final.

High praise for Eleanor

Gippsland South MP Danny O'Brien has added his congratulations to the community wide praise for Leongatha's golden girl.

“Eleanor has carried herself with such dignity through the ups and downs of her career and this win is just reward for all of her work," said Mr O'Brien.

“We are super proud of her perseverance and great dedication that has delivered an amazing win.”

"What a huge effort from Leongatha’s amazing athlete Eleanor Patterson to win the high jump gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in the US!

"Eleanor jumped a personal best of 2.02 metres, equaling the Australian record and becoming our first high jump world champs medalist and just the 10th Aussie ever to win a track and field gold.

"After the disappointment of the Rio Olympics, to finishing 5th in Tokyo and now a world champion! Congratulations from all of us," Mr O'Brien said.

Massive congratulations Floss, Gippsland is super proud of you!!
