THERE was an unfortunate incident in the first race at Stony Creek on Tuesday, February 6 with two jockeys involved in a fall and one horse euthanised.
The incident occurred near the turn into the straight when the odds-on favourite Nobiallo stumbled unseating jockey Beau Mertens.
It has been reported that the horse may have sustained a leg injury while racing and this caused the fall rather than being the result of jockey error, or any problem with the track.
The chasing horse Just Bolts with Tom Stockdale in the saddle came over the top of the fallen horse and rider and both jockeys came down hard in what looked to be a nasty fall.
The pair were seen walking around afterwards but Mertens was taken to hospital as a precaution and it has since been reported that he has fully recovered.
The promising Nobiallo was racing on the speed at the time of the fall and making its move in a race it was expected to win.
