Long-awaited skate park welcomed

BASS Coast Shire was pleased to welcome a $250,000 grant from the state government towards Kilcunda’s skate park and playspace project.
Councillors joined Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale last Monday at Kilcunda as she made the announcement to the community.
The grant from the government’s Sports and Recreation Victoria, Local Sport Infrastructure Fund will allow the $575,500 project to come to fruition, with council committing to fund the remaining $325,500.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor Cr Michael Whelan said it was a fantastic outcome for the local community.
“The Kilcunda Community Association has been very proactive in advocating for this project, identifying it over six years ago as a high priority for the town,” Cr Whelan said.
“We would like to thank Ms Crugnale and the state government for seeing the value in this project. The skate park and playspace will become a wonderful asset for Kilcunda.”
The design for the skate park and playspace has been developed over the past 12 months by skate and play specialist Playce, in consultation with a working group of local residents and the Kilcunda Community Association.
The accessible design includes a skate park with a bowl and roll in for beginners, a deep end for more advanced skaters, slappy kerb, water fall and pier seven ledge.
The facility will also feature a shelter with seating and an accessible ramp entrance from both the Bass Coast Rail Trail and the foreshore.
The playspace will include a natural feeling space with timber and rock features, along with traditional play elements for climbing, sliding and swinging.
The project will also include landscaping works, with some minor vegetation removal, however, the existing Norfolk Island Pine which creates shade will be kept. Additional trees and garden beds will be planted to act as landscape buffers around the play and skate areas. Seating, paths, a water fountain, bins and bike racks will also be installed.
