RITA Richardson made the Meeniyan Bowls Club members very proud after winning the Strzelecki South Women’s Champion of Champions at Wonthaggi in early January.
The playoffs ran across two days, one of which was played in inclement weather, with the rain being so bad that it drove the men’s teams’ home, but the women braved the conditions to continue competing.
“Rita came up against some very good players down at Wonthaggi and she managed to overcome them all, and come out the winner on the Sunday,” said Darrellyn McRae, Secretary of the Meeniyan Bowling Club.
“She did terrific. We are only a very small club and she made us feel very proud.”
The Meeniyan Bowling Club has less than fifty members and it’s been a number of years since someone has taken out the Champion of Champions from the Club, and even longer since it was a woman.
Rita went on to compete at the Newborough Bowling Club the following fortnight, whittling out the competition until it was down to Rita and another champion bowler - who reportedly wins everywhere.
Rita hung on to come runner up, being only five shots behind the winner with a final score of 21 and 16.
