THE BULLDOGS made the trip to Cora Lynn for Round 19 in what proved to be a mixed bag of results. The Thirds were outstanding, recording a big win, while the Reserves and Seniors fought hard but couldn’t quite get over the line.

Phillip Island’s Thirds continued their strong form with a commanding 71-point victory, 12.15 (87) to 2.4 (16). From the opening bounce, the young Bulldogs stamped their authority on the game, dominating clearances and using their run to stretch Cora Lynn across the ground. The midfield worked tirelessly to supply the forwards, who capitalised with a spread of nine different goal kickers – a clear sign of the team’s even contribution. The backline held firm, restricting Cora Lynn to just two goals for the day.

Best Players: ChaCha Fischer was relentless in the contest, Noah Forrest Mabilia’s ball use was a highlight, Archie Ross provided drive from half-back, Noah Williams was dangerous around goal and through the midfield, Jeremy Kelly impressed with his work rate, and Charles O’Garey’s strength and composure stood out.

Goal Kickers: Noah Williams 2, Jack Kennedy 1, Oliver Duggan 1, Charlie O’Garey 2, George McCausland 1, Jack Larsson 1, Blake Murphy 2, Max Kelsey 1, Jasper Cashman 1

The Reserves match was a real arm-wrestle, with both sides struggling to find fluency in front of goal. The Bulldogs defended bravely all afternoon and looked like they might steal the win late, but ultimately fell just short, 3.9 (27) to 3.5 (23). Cora Lynn’s accuracy in the final quarter proved the difference, but the Island boys can hold their heads high for the effort and commitment shown. It was a contest built on grit, with every possession hard-earned in heavy conditions.

Best Players: Darcy Thompson was outstanding with his run and carry, Oliver Hibbert provided toughness around the ball, Jack Keating worked tirelessly across the ground, James Nicolaci and Mikka Paulsen added valuable composure, while Timothy Niven stood tall in defence.

Goal Kickers: Travis Woodfield 1, Kirby Fuller 1, Bryce Pewtress 1

In the main event, Phillip Island went head-to-head with a strong Cora Lynn side and, despite a brave four-quarter effort, were defeated by 17 points, 11.6 (72) to 8.7 (55).

The Bulldogs started well, matching the Cobras in contested ball and tackling pressure. The experience of Cameron Pedersen gave the side a focal point up forward, with his three goals keeping the Island within striking distance. Charlie Bruce and Billy Taylor also provided spark, while the defensive group worked tirelessly to contain Cora Lynn’s forward threats. Ultimately, the Cobras were more efficient with their opportunities inside 50 and were able to pull away late in the contest. The Bulldogs, however, showed plenty of fight and will take positives from the performance as they build towards finals.

Best Players: Cameron Pedersen was a standout with his presence around the ground and on the scoreboard, Hayden Bruce battled hard and used the ball well, Mark Collison led from the front with his trademark toughness, Cooper Walton’s energy was crucial, Mark Griffin impressed in defence, and Charlie Bruce provided plenty of run.

Goal Kickers: Cameron Pedersen 3, Charlie Bruce 1, Billy Taylor 1, Jay Ladson 1, Jack Taylor 1, Nick Anderson 1

Next Round: The Bulldogs return home for their final round of the season, hosting Inverloch at The Kennel on Saturday August 23.
