POOWONG travelled to Yarragon on Saturday playing in all grades football and netball. The  ground was good and the weather was fine with a breeze to the southern end. Yarragon doing a good job hosting football considering the construction in progress.

The second last home and away game for the season 2025 with the last game at home against Catani with the U/18s playing Longwarry, which will be my final game doing write ups, enjoyed doing it but time has come to give someone else a go.

Poowong were forced to make three changes with Connor Cuningham unavailable, Fiachra Staunton returning to Ireland and Jett Blackwood injured replaced by three U/18s Hayden Hessells, Bryce Broadmore and Marly Cook for his first Senior game.

Poowong kicked to the Northern end and were first on the board with a goal to Joel Norton, Yarragon replied before young Anthony Orsini kicked Poowong’s second with a good running goal.

Yarragon added one more goal with the breeze to lead at quarter time.

The second quarter opened with a goal to Yarragon before Alex Henshall kicked a long goal for Poowong’s third. Yarragon added their fourth goal running into an open goal, Poowongs Hayden Hessells and Zac Gray goaled to give Poowong a nine point lead at half-time.

The first half both sides moved the ball well and at half time it was anyone’s game, good to see the improvement in the young players for Poowong from the start of the season in disposal and marking very promising for next season.

The third quarter started with both sides moving the ball around but unfortunately  Poowong lost Zac Gray with a shoulder injury and this seemed to unsettle Poowong’s game plan. Yarragon took
advantage adding four goals for the quarter to Poowongs one point to go into the last quarter with an eighteen point lead.

Poowong came out determined having a lot of opportunities, but they struggled to take advantage of their efforts up forward adding three points. Yarragon added four goals which ensured a win before Joel Norton kicked his second goal.

Best players: Micah Williames continued his good form, David O’Neill has had a very solid season up from the  U18s last season, Joseph Bisognin and Connor Ives have been Poowong’s most consistent players, Thomas Sherar has played well since making his Senior debut, Alex Henshall has been a good contributor all season.

Poowong Juniors U/16s and Under 18s should make the finals after good wins U/16s 9.3.57 to Yarragon 7.6.48, The Under 18s 10.11.71 to Yarragon 3.5.23. Congratulations to coaches Zac Gray and Alex Henshall with the U/18s and Mitch van’t Hof with the Under 16s great effort and commitment for such young players. Poowong juniors are second in the most disciplined club award this is a credit to the coaches and players.

The reserves battled it out going down 15.11.101 to Poowong’s 2.2.14. They had a better season and gave a lot of players the opportunity to play football. Netball had wins in all grades except A grade going down by three goals, the Under 15s and Under 17s should play finals.

Remember home this week against Catani followed by the vote count 6.30 in the rooms, note the  senior wind up is September 20 in the Poowong Hall.

Thanks to all the coaches, trainers and volunteers and canteen staff ansd supporters for their efforts and support, special thanks to Digrandis Qualty Cut Butchers for the meat tray raffle at home games.
