FISH CREEK is celebrating an upset win in the 17 and under netball Grand Final, toppling Meeniyan-Dumbalk United by 16 goals to end the Demons’ long unbeaten run.
It was a great result for the Kangaroos after losing last year’s decider to MDU by four goals.
“It was a fantastic game to come out on top of and by that much of a margin,” Fish Creek co-coach Ruby Lane said.
She outlined the reasons she believes the upset occurred.
“I think it was a little bit of Meeniyan expecting to win but our girls really came together and fought hard and wanted the win more than they did,” Ruby said.
While Best on Court Ella Cocksedge was too emotional to speak to the Sentinel-Times just after the game, coach Ruby wasn’t lost for a word regarding her talented skipper.
“Ella always plays amazingly and she’s always that in our eyes; she even thought she didn’t play very well but obviously that’s wrong,” Ruby declared.
Kangaroos co-coach Ella Schauble reflected on the team’s accomplishment.
“We’re just so proud of them all and we’re glad we managed to get out on top today,” she said.
Like all of Saturday’s Grand Finals, the match was played in glorious but energy-sapping conditions under the unrelenting sun.
However, there’s little doubt Fish Creek’s players and coaches found the energy to celebrate their well-deserved accomplishment in style, and the premiership cup sat nicely alongside its senior footy counterpart.
