THERE it is! The South Gippsland Men’s Country Week golf team have managed to win the Plate Division at this year’s Country Teams Event held in Mildura at Mildura Golf Club, Red Cliffs Golf Club and Riverside Golf Club.
Winning their first three rounds 5 to 2, 5.5 to 1.5, and 4.5 to 2.5, but losing their final round 2-5 they finished on top of the ladder.
There were many great saves, shots and important wins, including three in a row by country week first timer, 17-year-old Levi Perkins of Nyora, the continued good play of Jack Jacobsen of Meeniyan, who won all four matches, and some heroics from Korumburra’s Matt Wrigley.
A noted match-play exponent, Wrigley was unlucky to lose his first match on Day 2 when his opponent drained an 18-footer on the 18th but backed up on Tuesday afternoon in the gruelling 36-hole format to beat his opponent playing off plus-3, effectively giving him a five-shot start under match play conditions, 2up.
However, the job wasn’t quite done.
The first three rounds put South Gippsland in a strong position with a bye to come in the final round.
Golf Central was the only team who could catch South Gippsland, but with a halved result in their final round, it was just enough against some really talented opposition.
South Gippsland qualifies to progress to the Division One Shield next year.
