The Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) is holding its Whale Census Day this Sunday, June 25, 2023 and are predicting that a record number of whales will migrate along Australia’s East Coast this winter.
The Whale Census Day is a volunteer ‘citizen science’ activity for everyone to get involved in, choosing your own hours anytime between sunrise and sunset at a location of your choice.
“We are excited to announce, ORRCA have modernised this year and all data will be collected via a simple and easy to navigate app! Giving us the ability to easily update you all on data collected throughout the day.”
Or go to https://www.orrca.org.au/orrca-events and find the app.
To have your location included in the app all you need to do is email your and chosen location to orrcacensusday@gmail.com by 7pm on Saturday night and you’ll be sent instructions on how to use the app.
This activity is open to the general public all around the Australia coast, anywhere you might see whales.
To register email orrca@orrca.org.au with your location
The Whale Census Day comes ahead of local celebrations for the annual Phillip Island Whale Festival, June 30 to July 2. See details in next week’s South Gippsland Sentinel-Times.
