LKFC senior men’s side made club and League history by securing the League Championship for the first time and doing so with a female coach at the helm.

It was a tense beginning to the match that would decide the fate of LKFC at the top of the table. Knowing they needed a draw or win against Drouin to be declared League Champions and set themselves up for finals, the Senior Knights employed a tight press across the board in order to dominate possession.

It was a strong press from Captain PJ O’Meara that resulted in a GK deflection that set up Jethro Alison to score the opening goal. Alison followed this goal up with a wonderful second goal before half time giving the team an advantageous lead heading into the second half. The Knights set the pace in the second half with some excellent possession in midfield and some wonderful forward runs. A confident strike from midfielder Blake Moscript saw a third goal for the Knights closely followed by a Drouin goal, that penetrated LKFC’s usually strong and steady defence line-up.

Despite conceding, the Knights stayed focused with the determination to link up play going forward. Forward PJ O’Meara scored the fourth goal with an assist from Alison who secured a hat trick with the fifth goal for the Knights. It was left winger Henry Mbuthia who sent in the final goal of the match bringing LKFC’s winning score to 6.

The result secured Leongatha Knights FC’s Senior Men’s League Championship for the first time in the club’s history.

The win also puts them into the Gippsland Soccer League history books by being the first Senior Men’s team to be named League Champions with a female coach leading them. The Knights now turn their focus to the upcoming finals series set to kick off in two weeks.
