REMEMBRANCE Day is a lower-profile event than Anzac Day but still an important occasion, a chance to reflect on sacrifices made and to make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families through the Poppy Appeal, Leongatha Secondary College students taking to the town’s streets to help raise funds.
Sentinel-Times ran into the Years 8 and 9 contingent on Wednesday, just under a week before Remembrance Day, once known as Armistice Day and marking the end of WWI but now commemorating sacrifices in other conflicts as well.
RSL Victoria runs the annual Poppy Appeal.
“When you wear a poppy or make a donation, you’re standing beside somebody who’s served our nation,” the organisation states.
Money raised goes to providing essential support, from mental healthcare and housing assistance to employment services and community connection.
One of the enthusiastic Leongatha students said the key to fundraising success is persistence, asking everyone in sight whether they’d like to buy a poppy or badge.
The less than summery conditions on Wednesday didn’t dampen the spirits of the poppy sellers, their bright disposition no doubt boosting the total collected.
