• A Grade, Division 1

LOOKING out of the race halfway through the A1 match at Scorpion Park, Nereena knuckled down and took a narrow victory over Town, scoring the 215 runs needed for victory with just three overs to spare.

The Red Caps won the toss at Scorpion Park and chose to bowl.

For Town, the top score went to Jack Hume with 69 runs, with Sebastian Kyle making 41 runs.

Jarrod Hoy had a stand-out performance for Nerrena with four wickets claimed, and Mitchell Clarke claimed one wicket.

This was the start of Clarke’s hero arc in his 200th game.

Town bowler Jack Hume claimed Billy Trotman’s wicket early, which saw Mitchell Clarke step up to the crease.

Fittingly for his milestone game, he made the top score of 74 runs.

“Clarke stepped up after we lost an early wicket, and the partnership with James Kelly ensured we had the game; we just had to finish it off,” Nerrena secretary Brian Gannon said.

Kelly made 49 runs, and captain Thomas Cameron added 25 runs.

The pick of Town’s bowlers were Jack Hume, Rhett Hume and Luke Ashton with two wickets each.

“It went down to the wire,” said retired sportswriter Don Livingstone, watching his young grandson, Frazer bowling for Leongatha Town.

With the ground still slightly damp after heavy rain, it was fast and furious cricket.

Nerrena will be taking on The Imperials in round six.
