Over $2000 raised at Col Sperling Memorial Golf Day
The fourth annual Col Sperling Memorial Golf Day was recently held at the Leongatha Golf Club.

LEONGATHA Golf Club hosted the fourth annual Col Sperling Memorial Golf Day on behalf of the Koonwarra Leongatha RSL Cricket Club’s past players last Friday.

In cool and windy conditions, 75 players braved the weather, and some pretty hot golf was played.

Two groups carded a scratch score of 58 (12 under), but the day’s winners with a net score of 49.5 was the team of Sam Sperling, Paul Le Page, Damien Symons and Mark Cantwell – Paul, a grandson of Col’s and Sam, a great nephew.

Nearest the pins went to Nick Shaw, Ian Davidson, Patrick Bowd and Paul Kennedy.

Russell Hughes won the longest drive on the first that ended up about 30 short of the green.

Festivities continued after play with a tribute to former club great Barry Wigney, who played for many years.

His eldest son Brad, a former state player for South Australia and teammate of Barry Alan Sperling shared stories of Barry’s career with those present.

After the most subscribed year to date and with well over $2000 being raised for the cricket club, organisers are already planning for the event to be even bigger next year.
