B Grade, Division 1

WHILE Phillip Island was knocked over for a modest total of 140 after choosing to bat at home, capturing a couple of Outtrim Moyarra Kongwak wickets has the Sharks back in the hunt entering the second day of the match.

While a few Phillip Island batsmen got a start, Tharidu Asurumuni’s 30 was the top score.

Five others fell on scores between 14 and 18 and number 10 batsman Andrew Tolley showed defiance with a brisk 15 not out.

Peter Dell starred with the ball for OMK, taking 4/38 off 14 overs, along with his skipper Kris Kerr (3/22) and Ben Maguire (3/30).

It didn’t take long for the Sharks to bite back, Jobe Williams bowling OMK opener Brock Furness for just 1.

Opening partner Joel Cuman skipped to 23 at quicker than a run-a-ball but Phillip Island captain Kurt Lane struck with just his second delivery, and the day’s final ball, having Cuman LBW on that score.

That has set up an intriguing day two.

Stingy Town makes day tough for Inverloch

INVERLOCH’S batting lineup fought hard at Thompson Reserve but could manage only a touch under two runs an over, finishing day one on 7/88, John Richardson’s patient 28 the Stingrays’ top score against the tight

Leongatha Town bowling.

Young leg spinner Ethan Smith accounted for Richardson.

Colin Bruce (3/14) was the multiple wicket taker for the Scorpions.

None of the seven Town bowlers used proved easy to score off, Levi Hickey and skipper Luke Ashton joining Smith with a wicket apiece.

Just 45 overs proved possible for the day but Town looks in the box seat for first innings honours when the action resumes.

Honours even between Imperials and Cougars

JUST 18 overs could be played at Leongatha Secondary College before the turn in the weather from bright sunshine to rain and poor light, Imperials on 2/53 against Koonwarra Leongatha RSL when stumps were drawn.

Opener Rowen McLennan established himself at the crease for Imperials, working hard to finish the day unbeaten on 18 off 56 balls.

His opening partner Flynn Materia succumbed for just 6 to a caught and bowled by Cougar Paris Buckley.

Buckley sent down six overs, taking 1/10.

William Cashin was the day’s other wicket taker but proved more to the liking of the Imperials batsmen who took him for 27 runs off five overs.

Hopefully the sun will shine on day two.

Limited action between MDU and Korumburra

MEENIYAN Dumbalk United chose to bat first at home and made it to 1/14 off five overs before play was abandoned.

Matt Martin was the Demon sent on his way, failing to score when he was bowled by Mathew Olden.

Olden finished with 1/10 off three overs, Scott Head delivering the other couple of overs bowled and conceding just three runs.

The match now becomes a 40 over a side one day game, with scores starting from scratch.

Korumburra negotiates shortened day

OUTTRIM Moyarra Kongwak’s bowlers were able to bowl just over 19 overs for the day at Digger Park, containing Korumburra to a laborious 0/38 by the time rain wiped out the remainder of proceedings.

Justin Greenwood proved the meanest of the OMK bowlers, allowing 11 runs off nine overs, Michael Whiteside conceding the same number of runs from three overs less.

While Cobra Peter Churchill’s undefeated 24 from 68 balls was accumulated at a Chris Tavare like pace, that was positively blistering compared to opening partner Caleb Turton who managed five not out from 51 balls.

However, both did their jobs on a day when little could be gained on the runs front due to the weather.

Phillip Island capitalises during shortened day at Foster

PHILLIP Island won the toss and made its decision to insert home team Foster count, grabbing 4/82 on a weather-hit day.

Just 28 overs were played, Phillip Island’s Matthew Parsons bowling half of those in an outstanding effort that earned him 3/32.

Justin Tran was the Sharks’ other wicket taker with 1/11.

Despite Phillip Island clearly taking day one honours, Foster showed fight as Tim Garvey (22 not out) and Brett Gay (14 not out) began to build a partnership before the weather gods took over.

Opener Jack Gay earlier fell for 18, one of Parsons’ wickets.

Glen Alvie and Nerrena to settle it in a day

NO DAY one play was possible at Glen Alvie Recreation Reserve with Nerrena and Glen Alvie now set to battle it out in a 40 over a side one day match on Saturday.
