- Beating cancer one long day at a time

ALMOST 250 golf clubs around Australia have so far participated in the ‘Longest Day’ fundraiser for the Cancer Council, generating $3 million for the cause, and last Sunday it was the turn of the Wonthaggi Golf Club and its vice president Layla Robinson.

Starting out at first light, Layla completed her first 18 holes with Wendy Cross, Yvonne Everrett and Steve Tyrell before a change of players for the next 18, including club stalwart Glenn Turner.

There were 72 holes to complete in the day with warm weather giving way to downpours of rain before conditions fined up again in the run home.

For Layla, the fundraising marathon was very much a labour of love.

“I think everyone has been touched by cancer and it’s such a good cause, to be supporting the Cancer Council and the important work they do,” said Layla between rounds.

“In my case it’s my brother (Cameron Davies a member of the Sandhurst Golf Club) who has been diagnosed with Multiple myeloma, a disease which affects plasma cells in the bone marrow.

“It’s a small effort in comparison to the challenges a lot of people face every day,” she said.

Layla thanked some of her major sponsors including Shayn Liddle of Illa May Clothing, Peter Liddle of Wonthaggi Mensland, the Wonthaggi Golf Club committee and members and the Wonthaggi Club and The Clubhouse, and also all those who joined her along the way or donated to the cause.

“You ca still donate to the Wonthaggi Golf Club effort online,” said Layla.

Having a golf cart certainly helped when playing 72 holes in the one day as part of the Longest Day challenge for the Cancer Council but it was still a long day for Layla Robinson and her supporters.
