WHILE Wonthaggi’s effort in making the Reserves finals was commendable, given Power’s injury issues this season, Maffra proved too strong in Sunday’s Elimination Final to win by 33 points.

Wonthaggi hung in the contest until halftime, trailing by just 14 points at that stage, but despite its best efforts could manage just a solitary behind after the long break.

The Eagles made a decisive break in the third term by booting three goals while keeping Power scoreless.

Wonthaggi fought it out, levelling the final quarter at a behind each.

Andrew McNeel, James Lewis and Cade Brown did best for the beaten side, with Ryda Kay-Darts and Lewis registering Power’s couple of goals for the day.

Wonthaggi coach Riley Lindsay praised inside midfielder McNeel’s characteristic contested work, noting his ability to win the footy and supply it to Power’s running players.

“He’s really good defensively too,” Lindsay said of McNeel’s willingness to work both ways and shut down difficult opponents.

Midfielder Lewis displayed his blend of speed and skills, while Brown played off the back flank on Sunday rather than filling his usual midfield post, providing drive out of defence, coach Lindsay remarking on his composure under pressure.

A strong start to the year and winning a number of away games put Power in a good position to reach the finals.

Sustaining strong effort over the four quarters was a key focus on Sunday with Lindsay pleased with the commitment level throughout.

“Our effort all day was really good,” he said, acknowledging Maffra’s experience won out with the Eagles playing smart footy in the wet conditions.

Winston Gieschen helped give Maffra early momentum, booting a couple of first-quarter majors and finishing with three for the match, being among the winner’s best, Ryan Phelan lead the way as the Eagles’ top performer.
