BASS Coast Breakers celebrated Ella Cargill’s 100th match for the club in style, holding Mt Eliza goalless and winning by 38 points away from home.
Cargill, a favourite amongst teammates and spectators alike, has been there from the start, missing only a couple of matches since the team’s inception in 2017.
The Breakers started against the wind, which was strongly favouring one pocket.
As a result, the home side had a lot of the play in the first quarter but the Breakers backline led by Brooke Mckean did well to shut the game down and keep them goalless.
It was Bass Coast’s turn to attack in the second quarter; however, despite creating a number of attempts, the dead pocket also got the better of them.
A goal late in the quarter finally broke the deadlock and gave the Breakers a bit of momentum going into the second half.
They maintained their attack in the third, with a goal into the wind.
It was created by nice ball movement, with Gaby Hynes not blazing away and giving the hands off to Immy Bradford who made the most of the opportunity.
The backline continued to limit Mt Eliza’s opportunities, with Jayde Lamb taking some strong marks and Cloe Booth attacking the ball and driving it forward.
Sophie McCracken-Evans played a key role in directing play to the open side of the ground.
The Breakers took better advantage of the wind in the last quarter with Tayla Stahl and Cargill adding goals early to stretch the lead.
A shot attempt by Jenna Russo fell short, Cargill reading the drop of the ball to score her second major from the goal line.
Play of the day came in the dying seconds of the match with a long kick from the centre clearance giving Stahl the chance to snap a goal from the dead pocket, her third major for the match and the Breakers’ second in a minute.
Final score: Breakers 6.6-42 def Mt Eliza 0.4-4
Best: Jenna Russo, Gaby Hynes, Molly Conroy, Tess Angarane, Jayde Lamb, Sophie McCracken-Evans
Goals: Tayla Stahl 3, Ella Cargill 2, Immy Bradford
This week the Breakers face Karingal on Saturday at 1pm at Ballam Park.
