Club post strong score against Killy-Bass

Wonthaggi hosted Kilcunda-Bass at McMahon’s Reserve and Club won the toss and chose to bat first. 

Both openers were dismissed for scores of under 10, but that did not deter the hosts, as Mitchell Davey (69 from 105) and Emmet Dempsey (72 from 68) were superb in the middle order, both posting half centuries, creating a strong base for their side. 

The rest of the line-up battled hard against the quality Sharks attack that never gave in, eventually dismissing Club for 238. 

Drew Herbert provided some late innings fireworks for Wonny’ while Jackson Baker (3/45 from 11) and Ryley Duff (3/52 from 11.2) were the pick of the Killy-Bass bowlers. 

Staring down an interesting chase, the Sharks went into bat for the remaining 22 overs of the day and were able to finish 1/50 behind Cameron Davidson (19* from 66) Jaydan Tregear (25* from 65).

Play will resume in Wonthaggi this Saturday with the Cobras needing a further 189-runs to claim the win. 

Mixed bag on day  one in Nyora 

NYORA welcomed Korumburra down the road to the Nyora Recreation Reserve and the hosts won the toss and sent the Cobras in to bat. 

After losing Jacob Beckwith for just two early, Korumburra recovered beautifully with a 65-run partnership between Tom Crocker (21 from 47) and Insshaka Siriwardena (69 from 83) to see them surge towards the 100 mark. 

However, after losing Crocker, the wicket of skipper Rumesh Rangana began the chain of regular dimissals as the Cobras lost 7/100 to finish all out for 199 with just under 25 overs remaining in the day. 

Evan Elleway (52* from 55) did all he could with the bat in a strong unbeaten innings in the middle order.

Nyora were then sent into bat in chase of the 200 required for victory and it was Evan Ellaway again, this time providing the goods with the ball, taking three wickets prior to stumps to see Nyora finish the day 4/42. 

The two teams will head back to Nyora this Saturday as Nyora look to chase the 158 required for victory. 

Sharks feed on wayward Demons

Meeniyan Dumbalk United welcomed Phillip Island down the road to the Meeniyan Recreation Reserve for their Round 5 matchup.

Island won the toss and chose to send the Demons in to bat first. 

The Demons’ got off to a shaky start but Steven Arnup (25 from 126) and his skipper Joel Sinclair (44 from 99) looked to really dig in and steady the ship, connecting for a 65-run partnership to turn the tide. 

Although the loss of Sinclair brought about a strong comeback from the travelling Sharks, who were able to take 7/47 to finish off the hosts for 161.

The MDU skipper top-scored for his side while Andrew Tolley (3/10 from 3.4), Timothy Niven (3/33 from 16) and Clint Wilson (3/35 from 21) combined to wreak havoc with the ball for Phillip Island. 

Both teams will head back to Meeniyan this Saturday with ‘Island needing 162-runs for victory. 

Tigers post decent total against the Alvie

GLEN ALVIE welcomed Foster down the road to Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve as the visitors won the toss and chose to bat first. 

The Tigers innings was a bit of a mixed bag, after losing his opening partner Mitchell Elliot for a duck Jack Gay (31 from 75) was able to get himself in and get a start batting in partnership with Josh Toner (14 from 61), putting on a 48-run stand.

Neither were able to go on and make a big score though.

As wickets fell through the Foster middle order, Benjamin East (83* from 131) stood tall, putting together a masterful knock to will his side to a decent first innings score. 

The unbeaten half-century from the Tigers’ number six was easily their highest individual total of the day as the finished 9/232 at stumps.

Dean Williams (3/30 from 9 overs) was the best with the ball for the Alvie. 

The Alvie openers will resume play this Saturday afternoon needing 233 to win in Wonthaggi.
