WONTHAGGI Club fell short of its target against Nerrena on Saturday.
In a battle between second and third on the ladder, third-placed Nerrena held on to show it’s a top-spot contender.
The game was played at the Leongatha Velodrome, where Nerrena began its winning way with a successful toss.
Opting to bat first, the Red Caps sent in captain Brian Gannon and Wayne Cocksedge.
They made 41 and 37 respectively but were both dismissed LBW by Justin Licis.
Batting fourth in the order, Cameron Baudinette put in another strong effort and top-scored with 48 runs.
Club stepped it up in the second half of the innings and limited the run rate, thanks to the efforts of William Speed, Jatin Shannon and Phillip Wishart.
Shannon and Licis claimed the most wickets for Club with two each.
With the Red Caps finishing its innings with 8/169, Club had something to aim for.
Opening the batting, Speed led the charge with 42 runs before he was caught by Cocksedge off the bowling of Jack Donohue.
Despite a start that matched Nerrena’s performance, Club could not gain momentum and found it harder to get runs on the scoreboard.
Speed’s 42 runs was the top score, followed by Aidan Quilty with 18 runs.
The bowling finesse of Cameron Baudinette was too much for Club, as Baudinette claimed a handy 5/29.
Christos Marinou was also a multiple-wicket taker.
Club was bowled out at 10/150.
Cobras crumble to top table OMK
LADDER leader OMK claimed its third victory of the new season with a comfortable win over Korumburra.
OMK welcomed the Cobras to Digger Park, where the home side won the toss and chose to bat.
Opening batsman Robert Quaife succumbed to the bowling of Darren Scott with just 13 runs, but Russ White and Owen Fitzpatrick combined well to put 35 and 28 runs on the board respectively.
Both had their wickets claimed by Owen Maskell.
Patrick Beadel then went on a bowling streak and dismissed three OMK batsmen.
The innings ended with Nick Wylie and Danny Elford at the crease.
Wylie made 21 runs and Elford made 24 runs – both not out.
OMK finished up on a total of 6/175.
Caleb Turton opened the batting for Korumburra and made 23 runs.
Unfortunately for the Cobras, this turned out to be the top score of the day with OMK bowlers Elford and Matt Whiteside going on a spree.
Jayden Douglas and Rob Gallagher contributed 10 and 11 runs towards the end of the innings, with Gallagher finishing the match not out.
Korumburra surrendered the win to OMK with a score of 10/95.
Blackwell’s brilliant 57
PHILLIP Island breezed by Kilcunda-Bass’ score at the Bass Recreation Reserve.
The home team won the toss and chose to bat.
It turned out to be a tough day for Kilcunda-Bass, despite a good start from Stephen Leman with 39 runs.
Edward Magnussen added 33 not out later in the innings, but with a final tally of 9/105, it was going to be a tough ask.
Wicket-taking efforts were shared between Phillip Island bowlers Daniel McCausland, Brydon Marshall and a fill-in player with two wickets each.
Thomas Blackwell and Marshall opened the batting for Phillip Island.
Kilcunda-Bass quickly dismissed Marshall with Jackson Henderson taking a catch off the bowling of Leman.
However, Drew Fusinato stepped in and made 33 runs before he was dismissed.




The game was called with Blackwell and captain Tony Hornsby on 57 and eight not out respectively.
Phillip Island won with a score of 2/106 in the 24th over.
Leongatha Town had the bye.
C Grade, Division 2
MDU fold to Phillip Island
PHILLIP Island pipped MDU in the C2 match on Saturday.
MDU chose to bat first and sent in Gary Webster to open, where he remained for the entire innings.
Webster opened with Tim Bright, who was dismissed by a catch from Peter Francis for three runs. Skipper Dale Thomas stepped up to the crease, where he and Webster made 67 and 54 not out respectively.
Michael Clearly claimed Thomas’ wicket.
Jordan Cleator finished off the innings with one extra run, putting MDU at 3/134 at the end of its allotted overs.
At the changeover, Francis responded by opening the batting for Phillip Island and was unable to be taken out.
Francis opened with Steven Niven, who made 23 runs before he was run out by Thomas.
Another 23 runs were added by Sebastian Di Falco, who was bowled out by Cleator.
Liam Cleary was dismissed for a duck by Cleator, but Francis’ 73 not out combined with an additional two runs from a fill-in player pushed Phillip Island over the line.
In the 32nd over, Phillip Island won with a score of 3/135.
Inverloch edges out Glen Alvie
ANOTHER close match was played out between Glen Alvie and Inverloch.
Glen Alvie chose to bat first and sent in David Hynes and Ned Brown, who delivered a strong start.
Hynes made 47 runs and Brown made 37 runs.
Batting third, Cooper Stewart added 22 runs, but thereafter the run rate began to slow.
Aedan Parker and Isaac Richardson stood out as Inverloch’s best bowlers, taking 2/24 and 2/18 respectively.
Singles were claimed by Cameron Butler and Wayne Chapman. Glen Alvie finished its innings with 8/137.
Chapman was in-form at the crease as he opened for Inverloch. Jordon Foote was bowled by Jarvis Hynes for 16 runs, but the partnership of Chapman and Michael Asbury made 50 and 42 runs respectively.
Asbury was not out at stumps.
Glen Alvie then ramped up its bowling pressure, with wickets falling to William Simmons, Kent Andersen and Owen Luff.
The top bowlers were Luff and Andersen, who claimed 2/27 and 2/11. Regardless, Inverloch was able to get over the line and made 6/138.
Koony dominates Nyora
KOONWARRA L/RSL proved to be too strong for Nyora.
Playing at Wonthaggi’s McMahon Reserve, Koonwarra L/RSL won the toss and chose to field.
Keith Maclure top-scored for Nyora early with 64 runs.
Amanda Linford and Travis White added 34 and 27 runs respectively, and Krystin Wurzbacher contributed 39 runs later in the innings.
Koonwarra L/RSL bowlers Campbell Riseley, Shane Paterson and Tyson Lund shared the spoils by taking two wickets each. Nyora played out its allotted overs, resulting in a final score of 8/209.
Koonwarra L/RSL reached its target within 25 overs.
Captain Ashley Boxall opened the batting and made 28 runs.
Tom Collins recorded 32 runs, but it was Glenn Matthies who sealed it for Koonwarra L/RSL, as he made 88 not out.
Nyora bowler Tim Cavanagh took 2/66 and singles were claimed by Maclure and William Uren.
Koonwarra L/RSL went home with the win with a score of 4/213.
OMK had the bye.
