C Grade, Division 1

WONTHAGGI Club held onto its win against Phillip Island in Saturday’s one-day C1 match.

Playing at the Rhyll Cricket Club, Club launched into its winning way by winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

The opening partnership of vice-captain Will Speed and Chris Fraser dominated play, setting Club on the course to victory.

Speed made 77 runs before he was caught by Michael Cleary off the bowling of Tony Hornsby, and Fraser made 57 runs before his wicket fell to Jaxen Marshall.

Justin Licis and Matrix Chisholm added 26 runs each, and Luke Borne contributed 29 runs.

Cleary was Phillip Island’s top bowler, taking 4/21.

Marshall and Daniel McCausland claimed two wickets each.

Club’s final score was 9/247.

Phillip Island also made a strong start with opening batsman John Manning making 60 runs.

Hornsby added forty-eight runs, and Jon Parry and McCausland made 31 and 33 runs, respectively.

Captain Sam Liddle kept the pressure on Phillip Island, claiming 4/41.

Matt Sharp took three wickets, and singles were claimed by Fraser and Alan Babu.

Their efforts paid off and Phillip Island fell agonisingly short, finishing its innings with a score of 9/227.

White’s century powers OMK

WITH a 105-run haul from Russ White, OMK was able to hold Kilcunda-Bass back on Saturday.

OMK travelled to the Bass Recreation Reserve, where it won the toss and chose to bat.

White opened OMK’s innings with Robert Quaife.

Quaife made 28 runs before he was bowled by Hunter Bettles.

Owen Fitzpatrick joined White and made 42 runs before he was bowled by Ash Joseph.

White and Justin Greenwood closed the innings together, making 105 and 51 not out.

Kilcunda-Bass was tasked with chasing down 2/236.

Joel Huckett and Joel Dickson had Kilcunda-Bass off to a good start with 49 and 57 runs respectively.

Both were bowled by Greenwood and Vijai Kumar Gopal, batting third in the order, added 30 runs.

Chris Henderson wrapped it up for Kilcunda-Bass with 36 not out.

Greenwood recorded OMK’s best bowling figures with 3/36.

Jordan Myors and Quaife claimed two wickets each.

Kilcunda-Bass could not manage to reach its goal, finishing the day with 7/206.

Town crumbles as Korumburra cruises

A MERE 13 overs were all that was required for Korumburra to secure a win over Leongatha Town.

Town won the toss and chose to bat first.

Captain Alex Aeschlimann opened with Tim Cashin, but a delivery from Bryce Riddell saw Aeschlimann caught by Rob Gallagher for just three runs.

Cashin and Sakthy Vs went on to put 25 and 26 runs on the board respectively, which were Town’s top scores.

Callum Smith later added 15 runs.

Korumburra’s bowling effort was led by Shaun McKinnon, who took 3/5.

Riddell, Thomas Sorrell and Darren Scott claimed two wickets each.

In the 29th over, Town was bowled out 10/94.

Korumburra went into bat, sending in Shayne Harland and Jacob Wrigley.

They were the only batsmen required to win the day.

Within the 13 overs, Harland made 29 not out and Wrigley made 65 not out.

Korumburra’s winning total was 0/96.

Nerrena had the round eight bye. 

C Grade, Division 2

Glen Alvie wins in nailbiter 

AFTER a close contest, Glen Alvie managed to steal the win from Nyora on Saturday.

Playing at the Poowong Recreation Reserve, Glen Alvie won the toss and chose to send Nyora in first.

Opening batsman Gareth Alsem was immediately bowled for a golden duck by Jarvis Hynes.

However, the partnership of Keith Maclure and Jaylen Waixel kept Nyora well and truly in the game.

Maclure made 71 runs before he was caught by Owen Luff off the bowling of Wayne Bridle and Waixel made the top score of 76 runs before he was bowled by David Hynes.

Coby Chandler and Amanda Linford were at the crease for the rest of the innings, making 48 and seven not out.

Nyora reached a score of 3/230.

Glen Alvie also stumbled early when it lost Daniel McGuirk for just three runs, but Hynes delivered 132 not out to win the game.

Captain Ian Thorn and Luke Scholz stepped up to bat during the innings, making 14 and 19 runs respectively before they were dismissed.

The three wickets were taken by William Dixon, Maclure and Travis White.

Luff closed the innings with Hynes and contributed 44 runs to the total.

Glen Alvie won the day with 3/231.

Diggers dominate

OMK proved to be too tough for Inverloch.

Playing at home, the Diggers won the toss and chose to bowl.

David Harris opened for Inverloch and made the top score of 51 runs.

Wayne Chapman made 47 runs, but the rest of the order struggled to hit the scoreboard.

OMK captain Michael Whiteside and Mathew Walker shared the bowling honours, claiming 2/15 and 2/26 respectively.

Inverloch played out its allotted overs and reached a score of 7/162.

Jason Smith was quick to bowl out Ryan Wyatt, but OMK took control of the game from there.

Walker top scored with 67 runs before he was caught by Shaun Hayes off the bowling of Mitchell Woods.

The partnership of Noah Furness and Danny Elford made 28 and 55 not out, closing the innings.

OMK defeated Inverloch with a score of 2/166.

Hoober heroics

MDU triumphed over Koonwarra L/RSL at the Koonwarra Recreation Reserve.

MDU won the toss and chose to bat.

Clayton Fisher had MDU off to a fine start with 31 runs before his wicket was taken by Shane Paterson.

Craig Hoober was the clincher for MDU.

Batting fourth in the order, Hoober made 65 not out.

He saw out the innings with Stephen Riley, who made 21 not out.

Koonwarra L/RSL’s wicket-taking efforts were shared between five bowlers – Tyson Lund, Paterson, Alvis Piksons, Jordan Pickersgill and Dihen Yuthmika.

MDU wrapped up its innings with a score of 5/168.

Koonwarra L/RSL captain Ashley Boxall opened the batting for the Cougars with 19 runs.

Batting fourth in the order, the top score came from Pickersgill with 27 runs before he was stumped by Tim McGrath off the bowling of Glen Cocksedge.

Rhett Collins later added 14 runs.

MDU’s Keiran Brown did the most damage against Koonwarra L/RSL, taking three wickets.

Riley and Cocksedge claimed two each.

In the end, Koonwarra L/RSL fell short of its target, reaching a score of 10/102.

Phillip Island had the round eight bye.
