KOONWARRA L/RSL made the trek over to Newhaven to face off with Phillip Island and the Cougars won the toss and chose to bat first.

In an even first innings, the visitors were put under pressure early, losing 5/24 to start out, but they were able to recover well to reach 9/122 after their 35 overs.

A match saving half century from Brodie Cary (52 from 40) was the difference as the Sharks skipper Michael Cleary (4/10 from 7) dominated with the ball.

The second innings was not quite as even, as the Islanders were unable to recover from their early troubles and despite nearing the halfway point in terms of runs, only one wicket down, they lost 6/10 to be dismissed for just 76.

A tremendous win by Koony on the road, highlighted by Kevin Thorne’s (5/6 from 6) masterful five-wicket haul, Tom Collins (4/12 from 6) was also a standout in the 46-run victory.

The Cougars will hope to ride this momentum into their next match which will come against Korumburra at home, while the Sharks will have the bye.

IN A C Grade season so far decimated by wet weather, there was a bit of action on the weekend, but sadly just one game.

However, that proved an enthralling contest.

Koonwarra Leongatha RSL forfeited to OMK, with Phillip Island suffering the same fate against Kilcunda Bass.

Thriller at Scorpion Park

LEONGATHA Town all out 142 drew with Glen Alvie 6/142

Glen Alvie set a solid target after being sent in by home team Leongatha Town, with the Scorpions needing to make 143 off their 35 overs at a little over 4 runs an over, with Glen Alvie keeper Daniel

McGuirk setting a positive tone with the willow for his side.

He opened the batting, top scoring with 42 off just 53 balls, with four boundaries and a six, an innings that was only surpassed by opposition keeper Nigel Hodges.

Jack Brown was another solid contributor, finishing unbeaten on 34, also scored at a good rate, albeit a little slower than McGuirk.

Leongatha Town president Cam Dowling, with 3/19, and youngster Yuthil Ratnaike who took 2/20 helped prevent a larger score by Glen Alvie, with the pair taking all the top order wickets that fell.

Dowling was pleased to get his medium pace deliveries on the spot, making the Glen Alvie batsmen work hard for their runs.

It was an impressive effort by Ratnaike who is still competing at under 15s level, with the medium pacer finding some swing to make life tricky for opposition batsmen.

Leongatha Town can thank its keeper Hodges for enabling it to salvage a draw, with his 92 not out 56 runs more than all of his teammates combined managed.

“He played all around the field and batted really well,” Dowling said of Hodges skilful knock.

An extras tally of 14 was the next highest contributor for Town.

Harvey Smith did best with the ball for Glen Alvie, taking 3/23 off seven overs, with Dowling impressed by his accuracy.

“He’s only a young kid and he bowled really well,” Dowling said.

The experienced Lachlan McRae produced a fair bit of swing, which helped him take 2/20 off his seven overs, with Tai Bolding’s accuracy enabling him to capture 2/15 off four overs of medium pace.
