A WHOPPING 139 runs from Emmett Dempsey secured Wonthaggi Club’s stunning victory over MDU on Saturday.
Club and MDU went head-to-head in a one-day match at Dalyston Recreation Reserve, returning to the game after the Christmas break.
Dempsey opened Club’s innings with David Britt, who contributed a respectable 31 runs.
Dempsey was a force to be reckoned with, breaking well into triple digits before he was stumped by Mitch McGrath at 4/220.
Jake Palmer held his own for MDU, bowling 4/32, including a golden duck that dismissed Jai Williamson.
Zak Bright also sent off Ryan Birkett for a golden duck.
Regardless, Club finished its innings at 10/254.
MDU’s innings lacked the momentum following Dempsey’s classy performance.
Matt Martin and Sam Bright were MDU’s top scorers with 38 and 32 respectively.
Birkett posed a challenge for MDU, claiming 3/25.
Williamson, Sean Roche and Heath Dobbie were also multiple wicket takers.
No match for Club, MDU went home with a final score of 10/171.
Glen Alvie triumph
GLEN Alvie stepped up to the challenge against Nerrena on Saturday.
Played at Nerrena’s home ground, Nerrena won the toss and elected to bat first.
A quick dismissal of the opening partnership saw the partnership of James Kelly and Brandon Tauro at the crease.
The pair made 38 and 41 runs respectively.
Captain Stephen Kennedy led the winning campaign for Glen Alvie, taking 3/32.
Wicket taking was shared between five other bowlers.
Nerrena was left to defend 10/165.
Glen Alvie was raring to go with the opening partnership of Matthew Donohue and Scott Peatling making a statement.
They opened the account with 45 and 41 runs before catches from Billy Trotman sent them both back to the sidelines.
Kennedy and Matthew Dakin ensured Glen Alvie would take the win, rounding out the innings with 28 and 31, both not out.
Wickets were taken by Nerrena’s captain Dave Trotman, Tyson Harris and Jayke Hoy.

Ton not enough to save the day
DESPITE a heroic 118 run effort from Ash Larcombe, Nyora comfortably defeated Kilcunda-Bass on Saturday.
Nyora bowler Mitch Rowe matched Larcombe’s competitive edge by claiming 6/29, taking out much of Kilcunda-Bass’ lineup.
Kilcunda-Bass travelled to Nyora Recreation Reserve ready to challenge the home side.
The Sharks won the toss and elected to send Nyora in to bat first.
Fourth in Nyora’s line up, Jake Hackett took control of the game when he made 69 not out.
Aaron Kaddatz also performed well, making 47 runs before he was bowled by Todd Smith.
Kilcunda-Bass’ wicket taking was shared between Smith, Steven Dillon, Chris Peckett and Matthew Grayson.
Nyora ended its 40 overs with 5/221.
Opening batsman Larcombe made his 118-run haul before he was bowled by Lochie Row at 9/152.
Unfortunately, little else was added to the total.
Three batsmen were sent back to the sidelines for ducks, bowled by Rowe and Daniel Blackney.
Kilcunda-Bass conceded defeat with a total of 10/168.
Cougars overthrow the Tigers
KOONWARRA/LRSL stifled Foster’s innings during Saturday’s one game match.
The game played out at the Leongatha Recreation Reserve, with Foster winning the toss and electing to bat first.
Bowling for the Cougars, Jason Kennedy had a day out, claiming 4/13.
Azhar Mehmood also performed well, taking 3/11.
Captain Josh Toner and Jake Staley shared Foster’s top score, contributing 11 runs each to the final tally.
Foster was left to defend 10/78 at the end of the innings.
Koonwarra/LRSL opening batsman Amad Mujtaba sealed the deal, making 49 runs before a catch by Toner sent him back off the field at 1/70.
Harvey Griggs took 2/24 and Toner claimed 1/7.
The damage was done and Koonwarra/LRSL secured the win as it finished the day with 3/82
