IN A match that was moved from Dumbalk to the Inverloch Recreation Reserve, MDU won the toss and sent Inverloch in to bat first.

As it turned out, it was a great toss to lose for the Stingrays, as they lost John Belli (11) early but recovered in amazing fashion as Jason Dennerley (108) continued his scintillating run of form.

Batting once again with his captain Warren Stewart (51*), Dennerley belted 17 fours on his way to a match-defining century, his first of the season after falling two runs shy in his last innings.

The pair put together a mammoth partnership of 140 the duo totally took the game away from the Demons, Stewart again finished unbeaten with his second consecutive half-century as his side posted 2/186 after their 35 overs.

Chasing 187 for victory, the Demons started brilliantly, with Tim Bright (35*) and Tim Laaks (76) putting some decent runs on the board until Bright retired not out.

MDU reached 113 before the loss of their first wicket as Keely Dennerley (1/15 from 3) claimed her first wicket to back up her dad’s century in the first innings.

The Dees’ and Laaks continued on though and looked a chance at reaching the total before a couple of wickets from debutant Katrina Burgoine (2/11 from 3) halted them enough to fall short.

Laaks finished unbeaten with a half century, but it wasn’t enough to get his side over the line, as they fell by 35-runs.

MDU will head down the road to face Korumburra this weekend, while Inverloch will host Koonwarra L/RSL.

Collins claims five in win over ‘Burra

KOONWARRA L/RSL welcomed Korumburra to Koonwarra Recreation Reserve and the hosts won the toss and chose to bat first.

Despite being in trouble in the early half of the innings at 4/45 and then at 5/72, the Cougars were able to resurrect their innings with an 85-run partnership between Harry Scrimshaw (62* from 68) and his skipper Kevin Thorne (30* from 54) who both finished unbeaten after their 40 overs with their side 5/157.

Chasing 158 to win, the Cobras never found their groove losing regular wickets on their way to being dismissed for 60 and losing by 97-runs as Tom Collins (5/17 from 7) claimed five wickets.

Korumburra will lick their wounds and hope to get back on track next week against MDU, while Koony will head to Inverloch to face the Stingrays.

Kilcunda Bass bowlers tie up Glen Alvie

VISITOR Kilcunda Bass couldn’t capitalise on five of its batsmen reaching double figures, with nobody pressing on to a big score, but the side’s bowlers ensured its 126-run total was beyond Glen Alvie.

Hunter Bettles led the way for the winning team, knocking over the Glen Alvie top three on his way to 3/16 off seven overs.

Keeper and opener Matthew Grieve (16 runs) was the only Glen Alvie batsman to get beyond a single digit score.

It was a Bettles’ show with the ball for Kilcunda Bass, with Cruz taking 1/17 off his full complement of overs, Dallas 1/12 off six overs and Daniel wicketless but conceding just four runs off a couple of overs, but they were just part of a strong team bowling effort.

Glen Alvie couldn’t get the better of any of the Kilcunda Bass attack, with Pat Rubeis, Kamal Anand, Ashley Joseph and Peter Bardwell capturing just one wicket between them, but combining for 13 overs at a cost of just nine runs.

Rubeis earlier top scored for the winner with 23, edging out Anand (20).

Glen Alvie’s bowlers performed strongly and gave their batting line up what appeared a manageable target.

Lauren Sinclair was the beaten side’s only multiple wicket taker, with Wayne Bridle,

Luke Scholz and Pieter Loos capturing one wicket apiece while not conceding too many runs.

Town too strong for RSL

LEONGATHA Town backed up its decision to bat first on its home deck scoring at a blistering pace of more than 5.6 runs per over to set Koonwarra Leongatha RSL the mountainous target of 198.

Scorpions opener Travis Strybosch top scored with 61, not having to run many of those given he hit 10 boundaries and a six.

Keeper and number three Ray Edwards was less swashbuckling, but still managed three fours and a maximum in his innings of 49, before being bowled by Gabrielle Perry who finished with 4/24 for the Cougars.

Glenn Matthies was the beaten side’s only other wicket taker, dismissing Strybosch, with Town’s other opener Tim Cashin run out for just five.

Any hopes Koonwarra L/RSL had of mounting a competitive chase were quickly dashed with the top five in the Cougars’ batting line up all falling before reaching double figures.

Number six Blake Smith top scored with 12, one run more than Andrew Smith made.

An extras tally of 35 improved the look of the Cougars’ score but they fell 124 runs short of the Scorpions’ mammoth effort.

Strybosch again stamped his authority on the match, taking an imposing 3/12 off seven overs, all the sweeter for the fact it included Koonwarra L/RSL’s opening pair.

Yuthil Ratnaike was also destructive with the ball for the winner with 2/7 off his allotted overs, with his wickets this season so far coming at just 11.1 runs apiece.

OMK takes it easy

Outtrim Moyarra Kongwak was the unlucky team with a bye this week in a season when players are particularly keen to get on the field now the sun has appeared.
